[there really isn't too much going on at Base Camp, Rory thinks - now that they've got everything set up and squared away, it's a lot of sitting around and twiddling thumbs and being nervous--well, he's nervous anyway--about how the other groups are faring out in the Dead Zone.

[looks up and smiles, faintly]

Fair enough, I suppose ... tired. A bit bored. [shrug] You?

[takes a seat nearby with his mons.]

Doin' alright?

[nurse_boy]

[eyes the mons a bit nervously]

Yeah, yeah I guess ... you?

[still sideways-staring]

[it's only an electric rat and a water...otter/weasel]

Pretty good so far. Kinda worried about Staraptor and Gliscor. But I know they'll be okay.

[nurse_boy]

[they're still not quite looking the way a normal rat and otter would to him, and who keeps those as pets anyway? :D]

I'm sorry, who? [he doesn't recall anyone in the camp going by those names. then:]

Oh, you mean them? [nods at the mons] Why, what's wrong with them?

[looks up from his journal.]

Of course, Rory. What's up?

[nurse_boy]

[looks around to see if anyone is listening first]

Look--uh, I guess I just wanted to set some things straight in case an emergency comes up. You know, with you being the group leader and all, and I'm not, but I'm the one here with the most medical experience. I think.

[it's plainly obvious he's not really used to taking charge, nor speaking highly of himself with confidence]

I guess--I guess I just don't want to step on your toes or anything. If something does happen, who calls the shots?

[clarklike]

[smiles, more to be reassuring, though his voice is serious.]

Medical emergencies are your area of expertise. If someone comes in here with an injury or any other medical problem, you're calling the shots. If it's a security hazard or similar, I'll deal with it.

[nurse_boy]

[dubious look]

You're sure, now? I mean--you've got some experience yourself. But, if you'd rather have me do it ... [amiable nod] ... then I'll do it.

[Amy's crashed on a camp cot somewhere, hands folded over her stomach and feet dangling off the end]

[nurse_boy]

[after all the conversations, comes over and sits down heavily on the ground next to her cot with a sigh, relaxing back against it and leaning his head back about level with her stomach]

[the movement jars Amy out of her doze and she wakes up with a jerk, blinking in confusion for a second before registering Rory about to use her stomach for a headrest]

[turns his head slightly towards her, eyes half-shut, and smiles]
