in my recent attempt to teach myself german in less than a month, i've been hitting the books pretty hard. so for a little break i've decided to watch some recent german cinema and see how much of the dialogue i can catch. and i'll tell you: not much.

i tried my first movie tonite: das leben der anderen, which translates to "the lives of others

gaining an understanding of history such a weird feeling.

i remember a time in my life when time was divided into two periods: history and now. i wonder if its just sort of the experience of getting older demonstrating what the passing of years and of decades is like and what the consequent passing of centuries and millenia must be like. context can be something of a mindfuck.

oh my goodness!!!! I LOVED LOVED LOVED the lives of others. D and I watched it about a year ago and for the next few months when we would go to the movie store, we would walk past it and wish that we could find something as good as that... or that we hadn't seen it so we could watch it again for the first time.
