in my recent attempt to teach myself german in less than a month, i've been hitting the books pretty hard. so for a little break i've decided to watch some recent german cinema and see how much of the dialogue i can catch. and i'll tell you: not much.

Gegen die Wand is a good one to watch for a more recent history of Germany especially for understanding the culture of Germans of Turkish descent...not that it is super realistic in any way...but Fatih Akin (the director) has made some big steps to showing his and many other Turkish Germans lives...I think you'll like it.
Inna studies under Fatih Akin...he reads his upcoming screenplays aloud with her class.
She also studies under Wim Wenders...Der Himmel Über Berlin (Wings of Desire) shows some really cool pictures of Berlin right when the wall came down...gaping holes that seem so long ago...
German history is really really interesting...Benno's dad wasn't part of the stasi, but he was a career soldier for the army...went through a similar shock as the guy from Das Leben Der Anderen when the wall came down...its amazing to think that your entire way of life could just stop one day and then you have to start thinking about what to do...not join the army from the other side, thats for sure.
Okay...keep watching films! There are some good ones out there...Herr Lehman is another placed around when the wall came down...not quite as dramatic though, in fact...there are a whole lot of good German films having to do with that subject. There's a kind of funny one placed recently about a kid who is half African American who falls in love with a girl who's part of a neonazi family. Thats called Leroy.
"Wer früher stirbt ist länger tot" (he who dies earlier is dead longer) would be a film to watch if you want to feel like a total idiot about your German...it takes place in the south of Germany so their accents are almost impossible to understand...its even hard for Germans to understand...but its incredibly good...it won lots of prizes and is one of my favorite more recent german films. here you can watch the trailer http://www.wer-frueher-stirbt-ist-laenger-tot.de/
