I don't even watch SPN, and I don't normally agree with you, but I hate insistence on a ship being canon when most of the "evidence" is derived from poorly-thought-out fanon.
I know. I don't even understand it. Like if you admit that it isn't canon, the shipping police are going to beat down your door and take away your porn? It isn't the end of the world.
It's some kind of validation thing, man, idek I've got a ton of pairings where the evidence points against it or that have been outright jossed, but why not get creative?
That secret made me eyeroll, because this: "they'd probably meet more of the criteria for being mass murderers or disturbed assassins" was exactly what I was thinking. And Wincest needs to be a lot more convincing and well developed for me now since I read the comics. Little Dean promising little Sam to teach him how to swim almost made me cry. And then a little bit later: Dean: "You make me a promise?" Sam: "What?" Dean: "Don't ever ask about Mom again. Don't even mention her. And when Dad asks if you want to know you say no. Do you understand? You say no. I'm going to do this, but you don't need to." Even little Dean did everything for his brother to have a normal life. And while I do believe that it would be hard for a woman to get between them, incest isn't really normal. Textbook speaking. /is shot for rambling
It might be petty, but part of the reason I could never get into Supernatural was because the fandom was... well, that secret kind of typifies what the fandom is. :P Way back when, I read a dead serious article in Sequential Tart by a BNF in the Supernatural fandom attempting to make the case that shipping Wincest was somehow more sophisticated than your average run of the mill slash pairing. Gugh.
And I say this as someone who occasionally really fucking loves wrongbadwrong incest pairings in fiction: from what I've seen of Supernatural? There is absolutely *nothing* about Sam and Dean's relationship that isn't typically familial. :P I wish people would just shut up and say: "they're two hot guys and they regularly interact with each other so we all think its hot if they have sex. If there were other hot guys who were not related to them, we would be all over that instead."
Gawd, it almost reminds me of the days back in the Tales of Symphonia fandom where people would write epic essays defending father/son incest because they didn't want to admit they were too stupid to figure out that Kratos' was Lloyd's father despite it being obvious from, oh, the first two and a half minutes of gameplay. -___-;;
I have extreme difficulty accepting that father/son incest can ever be consensual and so I take issue with it being represented as such.
Also: word to this. :P I don't tend to judge what people like in fandom and not much squicks me but just... y'know... your familial relationship with your parents is a lot more absolute than your familial relationship with your siblings. I can buy consensual, if fucked up, sibling incest, but there is a definite, inescapable, ingrained power dynamic between parent and child and it is a whole lot of no no no no no no no.
I realize this is a bit after your post and apologize for commenting on an older post but I read this secret just yesterday due to not having the 'net and totally agree with you on it.
Even with the whole 'I am a psych major' disclaimer it just struck me as yet another Wincest fan who really, really wants her ship to be canon and just has the textbook there to point to and go "See! See! It says so right there!"
