Planescape: Torment

I started up Planescape: Torment last night and played through the Mortuary. Has everyone played this game but me? Do I cut for spoilers? I don't need to now since it's the opening level, but whatever. I linefaced through the opening video (why can't I be a girl, is my fridged love interest really that important come on), and then the game won ( Read more... )

but also noticing all the barriers to roleplaying games, probably sparked by the can't-be-a-girl thing

I've noticed that this is becoming a more and more decisive factor for me, particularly in (J)RPGs.

I hope that wasn't too out of nowhere, it just struck with a "oh! I am not the only one!" moment.

Decisive factor for what, if I may?

I generally don't care about actually roleplaying in JRPGs.

Oops, totally left that bit out. If a game manages to pique my interest.

Even in JRPGs, when there usually isn't a lot of flexibility regarding story and such; I'm just so tired of the usual "totally normal except not"-male hero, and everything that comes with him. (For example, Unskippable's review of Arc Rise Fantasia's beginning made me want to tear out my hair in frustration, simply because it's so bad and overdone.)

I get what you mean, yeah. It isn't a dealbreaker for me but I definitely consider it.

I am finding myself wanting to roleplay through this game, because it is inviting me to, but also noticing all the barriers to roleplaying games, probably sparked by the can't-be-a-girl thing.

The can't-be-a-girl thing is rapidly becoming an almost total dealbreaker for me in terms of any game that reasonably invites roleplaying or character customization. If I'm allowed to decide what my character looks like and spend like twenty minutes fiddling with the shape of their eyes, or, say, a la Fable 1, if the entire point is to create and alter my character and through them, the world, then why the hell is it required that I be a man? Eugh.

And, okay, it's an excuse for me to drop non-roleplayingy games sometimes, too, because I get bored of being a dude.

I have played Planescape before, but I stopped at some point half-way through and never found the gumption to pick it up again. Re: choosing gender, I suppose that it's because the game is from before Bioware realized they could have girls who like girls in their game, because the Nameless One will eventually encounter a female companion who... actually DON'T become his love interests because I don't think the game even has one, but who the Nameless One is pretty obviously interested in and writes about in his journal. I guess they thought they couldn't either have a girl be interested in other girls back then... or look like a leathery zombie ( ... )
