"The "Fascinating" World of PapaJoeMambo" Dept.:

Well, despite the unfortunate and much inquired-upon abscence of lostjane (Chippy asked about ya Jane, that's all I'm sayin'...) I had a very good time hanging with my comics bretheren and picking up some dandy tit-bits to be shared out here with all of you at the Toronto Comic Book Fan Supershow on Sunday ( Read more... )

You're making me nostalgic for comic marts now, Joe. Lots and lots of boxes.

You are still too cool for school, but we like you that way.

I miss comics. There are no comic shops in Bedfordshire. I miss comic fairs.

I'll have something dumb and monsterous for you to read here shortly.

African Witch Doctors and 30 foot monsters. This is what the back room of my psyche is like, Trace.

Stuart and I met on a band exchange between our High Schools back in 1984 or 85. He and his friends couldn't remember my last name for the longest time so I was just known as Joe Ottawa to them. He and I hooked back up with anoter friend from the same exchange at York in 1986.

My fondest memory of the summer of 1989 (which was when that was) is Stuart sitting in a beanbag chair just outside of our kitchen with the sunlight coming in from the window behind him, with him with an apple in one hand and an Archie digest in the other - with a stack of Archie digests at his feet (Stuart is a COLLOSSAL Dan DeCarlo fan - he's the guy who got me into that stuff). As a matter of fact I gave him a Golden Age issue of PEP that I found in a bin at the show this weekend.

He's a great guy and one of the most talented comic artists I've had the pleasure of knowing.

I've known a lot of people in the Toronto area who avoid the Hobbystar's expo like the plague. I've attended it a bunch of times in the past, but overall I think most conventions leave a bad taste in my mouth. Warren Ellis' warble about the San Diego Comicon in Come In Alone is a pretty good look at what attending, or appearing at a con is all about.

I know for a fact that Ellis had a great time at the Paradise Con two years ago, and has actually gone as far as telling off the programmer of the MegaCon when Warren was approached by him to do the big summer show.

The COME IN ALONE article that Eric has referenced is here, if any of y'all want to check it out.

Next year's is in June, man. Come on and hang out with Papa.

Thanks for linking to that article. I figured it was online at CBR but never thought to look.

I'm assuming Skidoo has not landed yet. It should show up by tomorrow! I didn't have a chance to burn the Censored 11 stuff (my dvd burner isn't working well), but I'll get that to you sometime soon.

I'll be in Toronto the weekend of the big convention for my best friend's bachelor party. I'll probably hit the con on the Saturday afternoon for a few hours - will you be at the store or at the metro?

I'll be working at the store on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday that weekend.

Sunday is my day of, and I plan to do absolutely *nothing* comic-book related on it. Kind of a day of rest thing.

Everyone's going to think I'm like the Polkaroo. Okay, that was a lame joke. I wanted to go. :(

I mean, I was on special assignment.

A super-spy's work is never done. (I almost had to kill someone this time)

That's the only picture of me taken on Sunday that I really like. Looking forward to the Thursday excursion.

Oddly enough its probably the one that was taken latest in the day - so go figure.

Any chance to be with my Geek Posse is a good time.
