"The "Fascinating" World of PapaJoeMambo" Dept.:

Well, despite the unfortunate and much inquired-upon abscence of lostjane (Chippy asked about ya Jane, that's all I'm sayin'...) I had a very good time hanging with my comics bretheren and picking up some dandy tit-bits to be shared out here with all of you at the Toronto Comic Book Fan Supershow on Sunday ( Read more... )

"I must wash them off me" 32elvismovies August 22 2006, 23:14:53 UTC
I've known a lot of people in the Toronto area who avoid the Hobbystar's expo like the plague. I've attended it a bunch of times in the past, but overall I think most conventions leave a bad taste in my mouth. Warren Ellis' warble about the San Diego Comicon in Come In Alone is a pretty good look at what attending, or appearing at a con is all about.

I know for a fact that Ellis had a great time at the Paradise Con two years ago, and has actually gone as far as telling off the programmer of the MegaCon when Warren was approached by him to do the big summer show.

The COME IN ALONE article that Eric has referenced is here, if any of y'all want to check it out.

Next year's is in June, man. Come on and hang out with Papa.

Thanks for linking to that article. I figured it was online at CBR but never thought to look.

I'm assuming Skidoo has not landed yet. It should show up by tomorrow! I didn't have a chance to burn the Censored 11 stuff (my dvd burner isn't working well), but I'll get that to you sometime soon.

I'll be in Toronto the weekend of the big convention for my best friend's bachelor party. I'll probably hit the con on the Saturday afternoon for a few hours - will you be at the store or at the metro?

I'll be working at the store on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday that weekend.

Sunday is my day of, and I plan to do absolutely *nothing* comic-book related on it. Kind of a day of rest thing.

If I still lived in Toronto, and actually attended some of the other conventions, I might look at it a different way, but for now, that's been my experience.

There are a few conventions that still remember that they are supposed to fun for the people that attend and the people that participate in them, and keep the focus on the material instead of the peripherals. Heroes Con in Charlotte NC is one, the Baltimore Comicon is too, as is the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle WA.

It's important to remember that Mister Ellis is also something of a curmudgeon who has a vested interest in making it look as if he hates all humanity. It's my personal experience that he's not quite the Angry Old Bastard he likes to depict himself as.

When you deal with a line of 500 fans, the 5-10 that are socially odious will stand out for you, and the 490-495 who aren't seem strangely to blend into the distance somehow. Statisticly speaking, that small group of the Truly Odd barely even exist, but they're the folks that draw the fire of the vocal and the attention of the people writing "articles" for the Toronto Star.
