some just love knowledge and go to colloge for the love of the trade itself. a perfectly egotistical desire. people have been willing to destroy the world in exchange of knowledge. However, this love of knowledge follows a higher call than just "respectability" or "power". Newton died claiming that his most commendable success was staying caste, not inventing calculus or uncovering the fundamental laws of the universe.

i agree with you here. i've always wondered if an entirely selfless act is possible. i think not. everything we do, we do for ourselves directly or indirectly. Yet, if we can feel good, while making others feel good, is that so wrong an aim?
