Dr. Tung fucking rocks! We had our presentations for our papers at his house over beer and bbq. Even in the thunderstorm the man barbiques sausages and gardenburgers for his students. I will walk away from Su with the image forever in my memory of him at the grill smokin' a cigarette with a glass of wine and an umbrella as the heavy rain poured ( Read more... )

Pandapropaganda, I like this Cooking Professor idea! The closest I came to such a windfall was a cup of espresso and a piece of fancy pastry from Professor Edwin Bingham, Ph.D., ages ago. It was a big deal none the less! Dr. Bingham was already an icon of the History Department at the University of Oregon, his three terms of History of American Thought and Culture being my favorite classes. My enthusiasm must have shown through, because one day out of the blue he invited me to go with him to a coffee house, where on his tab we partook of real espresso in demitasse cups (with saucers) plus equally-miniature yet delicious pastries. That was tall cotton in those days, I can tell you!

That sounds lovely. I've never went out for coffee with a professor. I would imagine that at a bigger schoolif the professor invites you for a cup of joe you must really stand out in the class.
My schools a bit smaller (or at least the English department is) so you actually get pretty close to your professors. There's a woman in the english department who takes her students out for coffee but I've never had her. She's a romanticist. Dr. Tung (like myself) is a modernist though so he takes his students out to the dive bar down the street for pitchers of beers instead of lates. :P
