Rebecca and I have signed up to walk a 5K on September 19th. We have a game plan to get in better shape before then but for this week we are working on eating healthier. The next step will be to get good walking shoes ( Read more... )

Happy b'day Jeremy.

Volunteering for the Ride for Dad sounds awesome.

I like your gameplan for the walk in September. I am trying to put something like that in place for myself but so that I can just walk. I will see what the physiotherapist says when I get back and we will see how well my feet stand up to the next two weeks. I know if I could get some of my weight off they would stop complaining. I was thinking about you and the walk while I was playing around in the pool tonight.

I was also thinking about the Running Room. There is one on the corner of Slater and O'Connor near my bus stop. As soon as I figure out what is going on with the feet I thought I would go there to purchase new running/walking shoes.

Running Room is excellent. They watch you walk barefoot and help you find the right shoes based on foot pronation. Shoes are about what yo'd pay at any athletic foot store but the service is better.

I also bought running room socks. They wick moisture away. I didn't go in for high tech expensive wicking racing clothing, but I figured good socks were worth the $9 or $10.

This is a milestone year for a lot of us in terms of fitness/health and walking/running.

I had bought some runners sock before leaveing for my trip. They were excellent. I never got any blisters while traveling around. I had bought them at Mountain coop. It was a runner who had suggested them. They had two layers which he explained that instead of the sock rubbing against the foot they rubbed against each other.

congrats on your walking intentions.

And your volunteering is commendable.

I'm glad you noticed a difference with glucosamine. Did you also know about chonondrin and MSM (I think those are the names...it's been awhile since I took supplements for joint pain).

Good for you! kes_zone June 3 2010, 15:14:39 UTC
Walking is great exercise and very relaxing. If you want to get a little extra workout out of it and improve your balance on uneven surfaces, you might enjoy Nordic or Pole Walking (it is called both). Walking with the sticks helps balance and weight distribution while helping to tone your core and arm muscles. I know the Running Room also runs classes for Nordic walking.

glad to hear that glucosamine helps you. chondriton usually works with the gluco. MSM can be used separately or in conjunction with both (iirc)

go you on the walk! and the self care. i'm trying to do baby step inroads on eating and self care. hard to do
*hugs*

Yes I am finding it easy to fall back into old patterns. Good luck with your baby steps.
