Saw the Romance of the Western Chamber last weekend at Kennedy Center while visiting my mom in DC. Strange to say, in spite of my opera fever, this was really the first full length Chinese opera I have seen live in a theater. Oh, that sounds pretty cool! Kind of wish I'd gone to see it. Is there some kind of mailing list for Chinese opera events? Or do you just have like a weekly Google search out :D;

Oh, human google -- my mom keeps up with all this sort of stuff - I would never know if she didn't tell me. You're in DC area now, right? I'll post before hand next time I hear something.

I see what you mean about Kunqu. There's a certain delicate eroticism even in the still pictures.

And now I remember a mixed bill I saw a couple years ago in China -- at the time I wasn't even clear about the difference between Kunqu and Beijing opera. But at the end my friend turned around to me and said, oh gosh, that was just like historical porn. And yes, now I think about it, she's quite right.
