the wedding

I was at the wedding yesterday, more accurately at the party afterwords, but I'm not sure about the english word for it (reception?). A friend of mine from work, Tihana, was getting married. Actually, I only got back home about two hours ago, slept a little, and now I can't sleep anymore, although I'm so so tired ( Read more... )

OMG, that sounds delicious! I think I would even like the folk music - I like the sound of traditional Balkan music, 'cause it's what my grandparents used to listen to on the radio when I was a kid. ;) I bet if their families had stayed in Croatia, they probably wouldn't have liked it much either, but as it was, I think they missed "the homeland" a bit, and the music was a nice reminder. :D I just wish they would've taught me Croatian so I could go to Croatia and eat lots of food and dance! ^_^

It's not exactly that I *hate* folk music, I normally love traditional croatian music. We have *klape* - thats originally from Dalmatia (the coast) - it's a group of all men or all women (mostly men though) that sings songs of mediteranian sound (mostly easy love songs) a capella, it's really WONDERFUL! Than we have *tamburice* - tamburica is an instrument similar to the guitar but smaller, and typical for the region of Slavonija (the eastern part of Croatia), and then we also have *zagorske popevke*, or translated *zagorje songs* which is then a little different because it's being performed by groupes of men and women (together) who sing and dance together on stage while performing, dressed in traditional clothes. But that's not only typical for Zagorje, but all of Croatia, except the clothes and the way of dancing is very diverse. And in Istria they have an instrument similar to scottish bagpipes. And I really love and respect all those types of music ( ... )

Heheh, I wonder if I could tell the difference between all these types of music you're describing?? I guess the turbo-folk stuff is probably pretty similar to the HORRIBLE Schlager-Dance-Remixes they have here in Germany. :P I'm actually not at all a fan of traditional German music (I think it's a bit funny), and it just gets worse when they put a techno-beat behind it ( ... )

Yeah, i'd say turbo-folk we have here is about the same kitsch like schlagers in Germany, except that the styles are very different.

I liked the sound of the romanian band! :) It sounds very authentic, I like that. Now imagine a sound similar to that mixed with techno/dance/rock/pop all together and you get turbo-folk.

And Let 3 LOL they are SO crazy! It's not just the video you saw, for them it's completely normal to go out on stage wearing nothing but one sock (on their penises) and a dead fish around their necks (pretending to be ties). Don't worry about not understanding what they sing, I don't understand it either :D

I found you some videos on youtube. The first one is the example of how klapa singing sounds a capella, and the second is similar, but a different klapa, and it's not a capella, the second one is actually my favorite *klapska pisma* (klapa song).

Then tamburice orchestra, playing Mozart's *Eine kleine Nachtmusik*, and in the end the Lado ansamble. Hope you enjoy!:)
