For awhile, Vyers was unable to give much more of a reaction than a blank, surprised stare. She had come to him completely out of the blue. What could have brought her to such a state? His thoughts raced and his worry rose, but he hid it all as he wrapped his arms around her in a warm embrace, resting his cheek on the top of her head.

Questions rose and caught in his throat. He wanted to ask what was wrong, but thought it might be best to wait a little while with such emotion pouring from her at the moment.

"It's not fair," she says eventually, her voice muffled by his chest. She clenches her hands tightly, her crying lessened, but still present. "Why? Why does someone so young have to go through so much? I don't understand... I don't..." she trails off.

Yeah. She's probably not making a lot of sense. Sorry, love.

No, she wasn't making much sense at all, but that wasn't what mattered to him at the moment. She was upset, she was crying, and she had come to him. That was all there was to it.

Vyers opened his mouth, about to ask a question, and shut it again. What exactly should he ask? About what had her so upset? About what she meant? They seemed to be about the same, but sometimes it wasn't so simple as that. Instead Vyers didn't say a word, pulling away from Gwen a little to look at her and lend a silent ear.

Finally, she only says one word - one name - that might be enough for Vyers to see some light on the subject of Gwen's dismay:
