Do you always see the world with such a darkened view? She paused, remembering the mistakes of her past, the regrets that were never far from her heart. "...yeah. I do always see the world this way. The world requires it." She turned to face him, less challenging and hostile. "I regret meeting anyone here, especially when they can just disappear without a trace. I'm not a nice person to know. So why don't you just save yourself the trouble?"

A soft sigh escaped him at her answer, and Vyers turned and stared at nothing in thought. "Everyone will eventually disappear," he said, voice not too far above a whisper. "Whether from this place or in death, that is a reality we all must face. But we would not be who we are without them--or become anything else for that matter." He shook his head again. "You should not regret meeting those that you have here. Or anyone, for that matter."

Death... She swallowed up a wave of nausea, the scent of brimstone and a vision of blue flame popping into her mind. "Yeah...yeah, I'd definitely not be who I am now if I hadn't met..." Meg shook her head, moving to the nearest tree and leaning against it, pale and shaken. Perhaps it was because she was feeling as brittle and broken as she was, but having someone, anyone, listen -- even if it was a game or a lie -- was too tempting to pass up. Even if she knew better.

"I can't become anything else," she said after a moment. "I'm trapped the way I am. Forever."

Vyers' head cocked slightly at the woman's comment, and her sudden change in demeanor did not go unnoticed. What had her so shaken now, he wondered? And just who had she met to put her in such a state? Could this have been the Organization's fault? Still, it was her final statement that bothered him the most, and he didn't think he would get an answer out of her so quickly anyway. "Forever is a very long time, my dear. You would be surprised at just how much people are able to change."

Vyers closed his eyes, memories of his son before Krichevskoy had become Vyers passing through his head, as well as the knowledge of the young man Laharl had become. "I have witnessed such change with my own eyes. Some may be set in their ways and unable to move on, but I do not think you are among them. You underestimate yourself."

"You don't know me," she said, though the hostility was a dull edge this time around, a weak attack as a last ditch effort. "How can you say anything about me when you don't even know my name? Stupid..." Meg placed the tips of her finger to her forehead, closing her eyes. "I'm not...I'm not underestimating myself. I'm being realistic about my situation. I can't afford to lie to myself, okay?"

"Because I have seen many others make that same claim," Vyers began, half-ignoring the woman's latter statements in favor of answering her question. "Many who believed they could not change, that they were trapped by one set definition of who they were, found themselves more than capable of breaking beyond those bounds and becoming something more. You are just as capable of change as anyone else. You simply do not realize it yet."

His eyes opened again, and Vyers stared at the woman with a smile. She truly was lovely. "But if a name would help you, I will offer my own. I am Vyers," he decided to drop the title for now, as the situation didn't seem to call for it, "yourself?"

Geez, the crap that came out of this guy's mouth. Even as it made her bristle, though, something resonating within her. Maybe it wasn't time to give up yet. Maybe in this world, with all the magic and mystery surrounding her, there might still be a way to win. Or at the very least, not lose. She shook her head, ignoring such hope. It was too frightening to think about.

As she met his eyes, the frown on her face lessened. It wasn't quite a smile but it was start. "...Megara. Meg."

A start was just fine with Vyers as long as it would someday become a smile. Now that the frown was starting to disappear she looked even more beautiful than before. "Meg," he said, nodding once. "Now, if you do not mind me asking, what is it that put such a frown on your face?"

A question that would only serve to put it back, he knew, but perhaps he might be able to help her in some way.

As Vyers suspected, the frown was back in an instant, her eyes cold steel. Yet, she didn't snap at him. Something held her back from letting him have it. Lowering her gaze, she sighed. "...let's just say I've made some stupid decisions." She wasn't about to pour her heart out to this guy, after all. But it couldn't hurt to talk a little.

My, this woman could be quite intimidating when she wanted to be, couldn't she? Vyers squirmed a little under Meg's cold gaze, only able to offer a sheepish, slightly nervous grin in response at first. Only when he looked away was he able to answer. "Ah, but you cannot allow that to rule your life. Mistakes are made. What is important is to work past them." The more time he spent in Paixao, the more he seemed to be learning that.

She lifted her gaze, a faint sardonic smile on her face. "You talk like you've made a few mistakes yourself." And wasn't it obvious he had? His ridiculous outfit, for example. Not to mention his continuing pursuit of her. Some guys just never learned.

S'okay. XD Mine is too. mysterious_moi June 19 2011, 01:53:27 UTC
Vyers "mn"ed softly, sounding distant. He would rather not go into his mistakes. This was about her, was it not? "A few, perhaps."

Eyebrow raised, she caught his unwillingness to share such a thing. It only interested her more. "You wanna know my life story but you can't return the favor, is that it? Tell you what, a mistake for a mistake. A regret for a regret. I'll show you mine if you show me yours."

Vyers frowned, suddenly disliking the way this conversation was going. He had plenty of moments where he made mistakes--some that he knew that they were and others it took until recently to learn--but he couldn't think of any he particularly wanted to share. Perhaps if he were vague enough he might be able to complete this deal without giving too much away?

"Nearly making a choice that could have ended my life," he said. It was something recent, and hopefully something he wouldn't have to go into his past on, if she didn't ask him to elaborate. But just in case... "I... would rather not go into the details."

Vyers half-wondered if he should have used something from when he was fighting Laharl in the Netherworld, but... Well, that would have left a worse impression with this beautiful woman than he would have liked, even if it was a little less personal.

She watched Vyers expectantly as he frowned, arms folded. When he finally, reluctantly, let something out, she smiled without humor. She smiled as if she had a secret joke, just for her. "Yeah? I did make a choice that ended my life." So to speak, anyway. She wasn't dead yet, but could her existence really be called living? It was just a waiting game now. Waiting for her body to match her heart in death, for her soul to join the countless damned in Hades' underworld.

Vyers' frown only deepened, and if Meg looked closely, she would have seen him tense for the briefest of moments. "My dear," he began, speaking quickly and still unable to look the woman in the eye, "please do not joke about such things. That is a grave decision, and there are many in this place who have made such choices themselves."

He paused a moment. "But if that is truly what happened to you, then I am sorry you were forced to make that decision."
