Thief?

Luffy's eyes instantly narrowed at the term, apparently offensive to the young man in the straw hat. Being called a common thief seemed to lowly; for someone with such mountainous dreams, as well as the power and will to back them up, there was no way he could accept the insult lightly. He stared back at the steely SOLDIER, taking in Sephiroth's chilly demeanor and condemning eyes, and remained unflinching and unwaivering himself. He even seemed to forget that the reach of Sephiroth's blade was still lingering just around his neck.

"I'm no thief." he replied frankly, his voice still casual. He was a pirate, but this man didn't need to know that just yet. "What's the big deal anyway? The food here is free. I even gave that guy a bunch of pebbles, and he gave me food." Naturally, Luffy's own form of logic brought him to the conclusion that there was no harm in taking the rest of the food in the cafe as well, since it cost next to nothing. "Maybe you should take your sword away? I don't really like it so close."

Take the sword away? Perhaps. But not until and unless this kid understood the gravity of the situation fully. "Taking things without asking - in particular, -my- dinner - is thievery. Very -base- thievery at that, when food is, as you put it, so cheap here. You would be put out what, five seconds to go outside and snap off a limb from a tree? Maybe ten? And yet you chose to steal. Unacceptable. You will make retribution or lose your hands; the choice is yours."

Morality was not, perhaps, one of Sephiroth's strongest suits, but he had some very definite views on some things. This just happened to be one of them...

"Ehhh..." Luffy, raising and waving a open palm dismissingly about, was apparently losing interest in the professor's lecture. His features slacked and softened, giving off a very dull and tired expression, just before he turned away from Sephiroth and back towards his own table ( ... )

With a casual turn of his wrist, Sephiroth placed the cutting edge of Masamune against Luffy's throat. "Stand up and face me, or I may take more than your hands," he said in as low and threatening a tone as he could manage - and given who he was, that's saying quite a bit.

To be quite honest, the silver haired man wasn't even all that worked up about the food. It was the idea behind it, and the subsequent lack of respect, that was sealing Luffy's fate. Chances were, he didn't even realize his peril...

Well, he'd know it all too well in a matter of moments...

Sharply, from his nostrils, Luffy exhaled a tired little sigh, and did just as he had been asked. Slowly and carefully, he pushed out his chair and stood up, rising to his full height, with his smooth, gentle shoulders reared back and his soft chest jutted slightly forward. Hanging by its chord, Luffy took the worn and sea-weary hat off of his head and let it drape down at the base of his neck, and there he stood, looking up at the taller man with a look not of anger, but strange annoyance.

"Naa, Long-Sword, I don't wanna fight you." Glancing briefly off to the side, he watched as the other cafe patrons began to nervously glance in their direction, many of them looking rather fearful over the prospect of a confrontation in such cramped quarters.

Not only that, this man looked very strong. Luffy, lowering his brows studyingly, knew full well that if he tried to fight this person, he wouldn't be able to mess around in the least.

"...but if you just can't let it go, we'll go outside." he said, still smiling lightly.

Sephiroth was in no mood for games. "You have five seconds to get out of here, before I make certain you never perpetrate another theft in what is likely to become a very short, very pain-filled life." To emphasize his point, he moved Masamune a bare millimeter, drawing an angry red line against Luffy's neck. "One..." he began counting, his eyes never leaving those of his opponent.

If worse came to worst, Sephiroth could just barbeque the guy where he stood. That was one of the benefits of casting magic using materia; no extended wait time...

"No, this guy's really going to do it, isn't he!?" Visibly, Luffy finally began to show the first signs of shaking. If this maniac actually starting swinging that beastly-long sword of his, he could slice the entire cafe apart with one quick blow! Anybody tall enough, or too slow to duck, wouldn't last the first five seconds ( ... )

Sephiroth followed the lightning maneuver with his eyes, letting his body work on autopilot. There was no room in here to swing his blade, not without risking collateral damage - precisely the opposite of what he wanted to do. And Luffy was moving too quickly for hand to hand combat. That left few options.

The silver haired general ducked below the punch, using the action as a winding crouch for a lightning lunge of his own. Masamune evaporated into thin air as if it had never been there, gone back to the materia he had used to summon it to begin with, and Sephiroth led with his feet in a flying mule kick that would have caved in the chest of an elephant. Not the most elegant of maneuvers, but it would be effective if it landed...

Harmlessly sailing on for a few feet longer, Luffy's arm continued to extend, then grew slack with a soft little twang before springing right back again, immediately returning to it's normal shape and size with a thick snap. It recovered, thankfully, just as Sephiroth had decided to reply in the same straightforward fashion, launching a deft, skillful kick.

Out of the doorway now, Luffy quickly held out both his hands, palms forward with one pressed against and bracing the other from behind. Sephiroth may have had the power to crush a pachyderm, but these were the arms that had held back a whale. Once he felt Sephiroth's boot meet his grip, Luffy tensed his arms, dug in his heels with furiously grit teeth, and pushed back as hard as he could.

Luffy's maneuver worked flawlessly, absorbing and rebounding Sephiroth's own force against him. He had not expected the guy to know that particular stance - he'd fought people who used it before, and while he picked himself up from the floor roughly ten feet away from Luffy, he realized that he had underestimated the kid, and in a big way.

It wouldn't happen again.
