Good luck; it looks like you'll need it with this crowd. He's right, though; you won't be getting anything immediately tangible out of this. The real benefits are respect, if you can earn it from anyone, and the potential networking opportunities. Meeting everyone new enough to be asking questions means you might make more friends in high places.
