Well, we are the proud conditional owners of a new (very brown) house that, all going well, we won’t be driven out of at 5am one day by homicidal neighbours! (Raising success by lowering expectation.) We’re very pleased and VERY RELIEVED that we got an independent valuation, as it came in much much lower than the asking price. Like, $40k lower. So

Congratulations on a new home!

And definately go with barcodes - and a scanner, and a computer list which can show you which books are 'out', who's got them, and when you can start pestering them for the book!

It sounds like you're speaking from personal experience - have you got a scanner? And what would I do with books which are too old to have barcodes? I wonder if there's some way of generating them? Of course, then I'd have to figure out if I wanted to desecrate those books by introducing a foreign element to them - probably not. I could make the barcode a bookmark though! So many options.
