I’ve been reading the fragments of Sappho’s poetry (songs, really), translated by Anne Carson. They’re heartbreaking. Of 192 poems, only 1 has survived in completion. The rest vary, some are nearly complete, others are just a word. People have general blamed medieval church leaders for deliberately destroying her work, but it’s not really true ( Read more... )

Back in April, I walked with family along a little river out in the country near Carlisle. Winter was washing away, and all the little baby garter snakes had just hatched. The bank along the river was swarming with them.
