A Tale of Two Movies

Jul 26, 2016 22:22

We got to see two movies on my vacation, and both are from reboots of established franchises:

Emily and I both came in to Ghostbusters with mixed feeling, considering all the negative feedback that's been going on. Some of it was from people who had not yet seen the movie, and I automatically disregard that. Some of it was from people who thought ( Read more... )

Honestly, I had no real memories of the original Ghostbusters movie, and I much preferred the new one to the original) (having watched both recently). But I think a lot of that has to do with my affection for the actors, honestly. I love everybody in the new Ghostbusters and have for a long time. I liked the guys in the old Ghostbusters well enough, and they were fine, but eh. Watching it as an adult didn't really do much for me. But YMMV, obviously, and the new one was really fun in general.

Haven't seen the new Star Trek movie yet, but I hope to see it soon. I'm glad it hews a little closer to the ethos of the original, since I've loved Star Trek from when I was a kid.

Ah, that might color my reaction, too: I knew and loved the guys from the original long before they got together for this. Two of the women I'd never heard of at all, and one of the others was familiar only by name -- it was only Melissa McCarthy who I've followed since Gilmore Girls.

I'm looking forward to seeing Star Trek

I'm annoyed that ghostbuster was rebooted instead of being some logical sequel that I haven't wanted to see it.

I was certainly annoyed by that, but I'm glad I was willing to take the chance. A friend of mine from England claims the director said in so many words that he wanted it rebooted because anyone who liked the original more--for any reason--was automatically sexist. I find that hard to believe.

I'd like to see the documentation on that one, yes. And no you really aren't (though I know some feminists who DO think that way. I dont' get it)

I did some checking, and Paul Feig did suggest that all critics of the movie were sexist--but he said it *before* the movie was released. He was probably hearing from a combination of the sexist and the anti-sequel crowds at the time. Me, I'm very hesitant to criticize a show that hasn't even come out yet.

I really enjoyed the star Trek movie overall -- but there were several places where we could not figure out what was happening and I really wanted to smack the cameraman!

Haven't seen Ghostbusters yet but am looking forward to it.

Star Trek Beyond is my favorite of the three in the rebooted movies. I thought it showed Kirk, Spock, and McCoy becoming the triumvirate we saw in the original series instead of just three officers who were friends and worked well together but nothing more. (And I'm not talking slash here - those three in the original series were more than just friends who worked well together.) I'm hoping to see it again in the theater. (And I loved the 3D credits sequences at the beginning and end! Though someone I know with inner ear problems had to look away to avoid being sick.)

Agreed, the three friends were definitely back as we know and love them! I didn't see it in 3D--on my budget, it just doesn't seem worth the extra money.

I really enjoyed Ghostbusters. I think the only reason for it being a reboot was to be able to play in a world where ghosts weren't accepted as existing so they could have the trope of the outsiders fighting against the system. It worked for me. It was a bit odd because I'm used to that world having ghosts already but once I settled into it I really had fun :)

Ah, but it would have been so much fun to see cameos by the original characters! They did okay with it, but in most cases I just hate reboots. Or did, until I saw Battlestar Galactica.
