Have you seen the anime? I love it and bought it as soon as it became available.

My impression is that Shinkai Makoto came up with the original storyline for the anime because all the other anime I've seen by him has the same story :(

I am curious about the manga adaptation and curious about how much input he had on its writing.

I haven't! I think it's on my Netflix queue, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

The manga is interesting because I've seen several people say it goes beyond the anime ending.

How interesting--it almost sounds like there's more of the story here than in the anime adaptation.

I'm a big fan of Shinkai's work: I have always wished there was just a little bit more narrative in his stories to go with the awesome visuals of the anime, and I have my fingers crossed that his next project, whatever it may be, will be the one in which he brings all the pieces together.

Oh huh, how does the anime end (in spoiler text)?

I have to remember to put his stuff higher up on my queue...

Honestly, I don't really remember. But your post made it sound like there was more to the connecting scenes? It's been a while.
