This is an adaptation of the anime of the same name, although I can't tell if Shinkai Makoto mostly came up with the original storyline for the anime and Sahara Mizu did the adaptation, or if Shinkai wrote it and she illustrated it

How interesting--it almost sounds like there's more of the story here than in the anime adaptation.

I'm a big fan of Shinkai's work: I have always wished there was just a little bit more narrative in his stories to go with the awesome visuals of the anime, and I have my fingers crossed that his next project, whatever it may be, will be the one in which he brings all the pieces together.
