Goodness how scary! I keep this weird long thing that is made only to use to turn off water should a plumbing disaster happen. My kids are 15, 18 and 20 and I have shown each of them where the little panel is in the front yard to turn off the water.

I have always feared a disaster like you lived through. How horrifying!

I'm sorry you lost your sci fi collection :( How sad!

My favorite part of this was: " It looked like a tribute to algae. I give the bride credit here: this color was so ugly that it would look bad on everyone,"

I truly wonder sometimes if that is why so many brides pick hideous bridesmaid dresses. To...look better in contrast? It's mindboggling! I was in one wedding and that dress was terrible on me. I believe I donated it to a thrift store at some point.

Your entry was funny/sad. When does a shut off valve break? Wow. Truth is definitely stranger than fiction.

So glad you all lived through this!

The valve broke because this is an old house and it got stuck, so my sister forced it.

Oh, and thank you for the compliments.

I didn't really get scared until it was over. In the middle of it, I was too tired to react, then too busy.

I've gone through eight different basement flooding episodes over the past 25 years none fun. I love how you managed to find that spark of humor at the end - the bridesmaids dresses probably should have been burned long before, but a flood works too - LOL.

Lol! That will wake up the most die hard morgenmuffel. We had a bathroom flood a few years back and lost an entire wall!

IF it had continued much longer, we probably would have had to replace the kitchen ceiling, because it was like a waterfall in there.

We got very lucky.

Something similar just happened to my daughter and SIL (HoneyB’s parents). Broken toilet pipe. my SIL came home from work to a scene much like you described. Insurance is covering all but $1000. We’re talking 20 K in damages in todays prices.

Our insurance covered just about everything: I know we had to pay something, but it was less than $1k. I think it was about $400m I think.

I hope the damage in their home was relatively easy to repair.

Wow, what a mess! In our very first week in our first home, my husband and I had to deal with the water backing up in the tub and the bathroom flooding out - thankfully it wasn't too bad, but I can only imagine how crazy it would be to try and shut off the water and then have the shut-off valve break, too!

What a wild (slightly horrifying) comedy of errors - that would most certainly wake one up! I can imagine my neighbors would need to move after all the expletives I would get through! I'm glad the damage was mostly limited to the basement, water damage in the home is no joke!
