Kingship, Merlin, Arthur/Uther, kingkindkitJanuary 29 2009, 08:18:01 UTC
The king is drunk. Arthur's never seen him like this, slouched in his chair with all the steel gone out of him. He looks strange.
He looks ordinary. A tired man with firelight glinting red off his grey hair.
The king pours himself another goblet of wine, having long ago sent the servants away. "Don't you think you've had enough?" Arthur asks, and only then does he realize that he's half-drunk himself, on watered wine and the last traces of fever.
"Celebrating," the king answers after gulping half of it down. "You're alive." He reaches across the low table between them and grasps Arthur's hand. Arthur wonders when he took his gloves off; the king prefers to touch the world through leather. "C'mere so I can see you."
Arthur obeys the tug on his arm and stands. The candle is guttering, the light dim, but the king stares into his face. "Father - "
"Never thought you'd wake. It would've - come here, boy." And somehow Arthur is sitting on the king's knee, which is not a place he's ever been. "The end." His father's hand, rough with

I'm not generally a huge incest fan either; this is the first incest fic I've ever written. But there's something so intense about the Uther/Arthur relationship that I can't help but imagine it expressed sexually.

This was utterly beautiful. So right for their characters. I love that it captured how much they truly love each other, despite the uh... wrongness of it all. But Uther trusting Arthur, and being tender yet powerful with him. Gah, this was awesome. Probably the best Arthur/Uther piece I've read.

Thank you so much!
I didn't want Uther to be a brute in this story (as he so often is in Uther/Arthur stories) because I think he's more complex than that. We see his capacity for tenderness onscreen occasionally, but he suppresses it most of the time because for him kingship means being unyielding.

This is absolutely gorgeous. Somehow, it doesn't even seem so wrong. You have Uther down so convincingly, and how much Arthur trusts him...heartbreaking. I love this.

I think they're taking just about the only route to closeness that's available to them; emotionally it's kind of messed-up, but since it's consensual I actually don't see it as morally wrong. Which is possibly more than you wanted to know. *grins*

how often Uther gets called "the king" and not "father"
That's exactly where I was going with that, so I'm glad it worked. Arthur not wanting to say "Father," is partly just because of the sexual context, but, yeah, he's also holding something back, because the sex is partly an act of domination by Uther as well as one of tenderness and love. It's not even conscious on Uther's part; he just can hardly operate except in terms of power.

This is stunning. Anthony and Bradley are so hot together when they're onscreen that it's quite hard *not* to think of them in this way, despite their father/son onscreen relationship. I suppose I'm sort of twisted in that I don't see it as that wrong if it's consensual. A wonderfully evocative piece of work that I absolutely love.

They really are. The bit in "Le Morte d'Arthur" when Uther strokes unconscious!Arthur's cheek just about killed me.
I don't see it as that wrong if it's consensual
I tend to agree. And I wanted to write something that, however emotionally fucked-up, was absolutely consensual, because the vast majority of Arthur/Uther that I've seen is noncon. Personally I don't see Uther as a rapist, despite his many flaws.
