Sometimes it sounded to Lillian that her son was calling to her from the end of a long tunnel. Even through the dank thoughts that engulfed her, Lillian could struggle free to answer him. Alexander had been the best thing to come out of her misguided marriage to Lionel Luthor, and Lillian wondered what part of herself she’d sacrificed to make it happen. The loss of one’s soul wasn’t as painful as you might believe. It barely hurt when it left your body and slipped into the possession of the devil. There were days where Lillian didn’t even notice the emptiness inside, the space where her soul used to live. It was easy to fill that void with lunches, spa days, golf games and charity work. Volunteering at Lex’s prestigious day school helped too ( ... )
