I want need a microphone for my computer. Peoples, what should I get? What are your experiences, good and bad. I don't have the slightest clue about them, or even how they connect, though I suppose it'll have to compete with my camera, printer and ipod for my one remaining free usb port ( Read more... )

Have no idea about mics, but have to admit I'd enjoy Supernatural fiction in English accent. It would be cool:)

Hee! But I'd feel so stupid reading Dean and Sam dialogue in my voice and accent!

Thank you, though it's not mine, but I like it so much:)

You could force your friends to read for guys;)

Not if it were porny!! I don't embarrass that easily, but very few of my real life friends know I write fanfic, and certainly not that I write porn, so getting them to read it out loud... Not happening! *laughs*

i have a logitech that is USB connected and its nice. i can unplug it and plug it in at any time its not a problem and it works decently well. i want to get a wireless one that you can put on your ear...that would be neat but those are expensive :X

I don't want to spend too much money on it (not that I've a clue what sort of price range they fall in). And I think one that just plugs and plays would work best for me - I don't want to spend hours working out how to set it up! *g* So thanks for the suggestion.

Sounds to me like you'd be best getting a USB hub first. But I have a Skype headset, one earphone and a mouthpiece, and that seems to work pretty well for me.

How 'bout trying to fake an American or Canadian accent for the reading? I don't do it when I read my own writing aloud, but that's because I'm told I sound Canadian already, even though I'm British. :P

Good thing I'm used to feeling stupid, because I had never thought of getting a usb hub! That is exactly what I need to avoid constantly scrabbling around under my workstation swapping connections over! THANK YOU!!!

Hee, I don't think faking an accent would work for me - I'd just start laughing. Besides my attempt at an American accent is, well, bad would be a kindness!

*giggles and blushes* Ah, you're welcome hon! I kind of have USB hubs on my mind at the moment, since I just had to go out and get one for the computer at work. ^_^

Hee. Oh well. There are some of us who can't fake it, and some of us who wish they had a choice, haha. I'm sick of getting mistaken for American. ;)

I've just been checking out usb hubs on Amazon, so as soon as I have a good idea as to what microphone to get, I'll get one. Thanks again!

I love my headset mic, but I'm not sure it would be the *best* for reading fic, you'd have to try one out to see. I was getting a lot of hissing and popping when I was reading, and putting a sock or a bit of cloth over the end cleared it up.

As for accents, I try to strive for accent-neutral when I read (thick US southern accent) but with a british accent, you're more likely to sound quite nice reading--that particular accent sounds professional and put-together whatever you're reading :P

but perhaps it would take some getting used to for say, SG or SGA, but for some reason I don't find the idea as bad for SPN or SV fics--maybe it's just they're not my main fandoms >_< anyway, don't let accents prevent you from reading, I'm sure you'll do a fantastic job regardless

I don't know that I'm actually going to read fic - it really is just a hypothetical! But I think I would like a microphone with at least a reasonable sound quality, so a headset mic probably isn't my best option if you say there's a lot of hiss from them.

I can't really go for a neutral accent - to me, I don't have an accent! *g*

LOL well I realise my accent is *atrocious* but being around my british friends kind of helps me strike a happy medium between bad southern and something a little more pleasant >_< I think regardless we'll all have an accent to *someone* so just read your fics and have a great time doing it--I for one would love to hear it!

and I'm not sure the headset mics ALL have a hiss to them, but I believe it's harder to neutralize the hiss because you can't put a sock over the end or anything :P

Having looked at one set on Amazon, a mini-sock would fit on the end I think! *g*

I'd probably find your accent really exotic!

Ohhh! Yes! As you know, my micophone is ridiculous, so I can't really help you with that, but OMGYAY to stories! I could FINALLY shrink you and carry you around in my pocket! And Clark and Rodney and Lex and SamnJohnnJohnnDean too!!!! Eeeeeeeee!

Hee! You know, I could put the message you sent me on my ipod and play you, and walk along with this big grin on my face, saying 'enthusiastically' to myself!! *g*

I'm not saying I'll definitely record fiction!! I just vaguely wondered about doing it, because I do quite like reading out loud. Besides, I might record something and then wince too much at the sound of my own voice! But... I might be able to work out how to do internet telephoning stuff...
