World Cities

So, it appears that one of (many) attempts to define and categorize the notion of a 'World City' is from the Globalization and World Cities Study Group at Loughborough Univirsity. Interesting. What sort of criteria are they using? Manchester is several levels above Liverpool, which is in the same catergory as New Orleans (totally fucked) and Salt Lake City (Incredibly wealthy through the Latter Day Saints' church). Is is purely their ability to subsist?

I confess I don't fully understand it, but it seems to be all about the availability of advanced producer services (e.g. accounting, advertising, finance, insurance, and law applied in transnational contexts) -- basically the kind of services that support large corporations.
