thebroomecloset and i always joke that we both come from people whose response to tragedy is to show up with casserole...

we're heading down tomorrow to join his family for his grandmother's funeral this weekend. we spent the early evening making stuffed peppers and steamed lemon-pepper broccoli for ourselves, then he washed a ridiculous amount of greens and i ( Read more... )

My mom was commenting recently (because of an unrelated conversation) about people who brought casseroles big enough for a dozen people to her and her dad after my grandma died. So she advocates bringing quantities appropriate to the number of people around to eat it.

I do remember it being nice when I went with thad_delaplane to Gang's funeral that her neighbors had brought food for all and sundry relatives to munch on when they were hungry - it made it easier to have one less logistical thing to deal with. The homemade 'nana puddin' didn't last long at all!

hah! we brought enough food for a dozen people - and so did at least two of their family friends / neighbors - but there were eleven family members taking meals there, so it wasn't an entirely ridiculous amount of food. since everyone was heading back to their respective abodes afterwards, we took our leftovers home with us...

and yes, definitely easier to have food magically appear when it's time for the eating.

I *definitely* have the "can I bring a casserole" gene... even to the point that I find it vaguely distressing when someone is far enough away that I can't possibly do so.

My solution in one of those cases was to pre-buy a bunch of dinners from a "we package whole meals for you" places.

Many condolences... I'll touch base with Mike too.
