I had a blowout on the motorway north of Birmingham once (c. 150 miles from home). I walked the wrong way to the emergency phone and eventually got picked up by the police who were not impressed by my abandoned car. Actually it was a mercy - they changed the tyre for free, and only patronised me mercilessly for around half an hour. A small price.

I had to change 5 flat tires (including the spare) in 18 months - they were all on the car when I bought it and went out essentially around the same time. I got the process down to 10 minutes, flat. ;)

One of the very few things my dad ever taught me was how to change a tire. It's come in handy more than once.
