Dead and Alive
Rhys would never know about his death and resurrection.
Actually, thought Gwen, he'd died twice: did that make one resurrection, or two?
He would never know he had died. Alternate worlds, alternate Rhyses, some of them long dead, leaving her a grieving survivor. Her head ached to think about it. All those possibilities. For Bilis, past and future were pebbles under cups, a con man's trick.
In other plausibilities, she was shot by Suzie, exploded into dust by the sex alien, or stabbed by Ed Morgan.
They were lucky to be alive, both of them, alive together and in love.
