"Lanky lizards!"
Weetzie couldn't believe her eyes when she and Slinkster Dog entered the pool area. She was decked out in the best retro swimwear she could find: a polka-dotted red bikini that Esther Williams could have worn. She wore a flower in her spit-curled blond hair, too, just like Esther, and perfect red lipstick and a bracelet with

She grins. "Groovy."
River hurries over to Weetzie. "This place looks great! Thank goodness for robots with a flair for decor!" She looks at her friend. "And you look super-fantastic. Shiny."
This was so much more fun than the cotillion she had to have for her thirteenth birthday... "I hope lots of people come. Lots and lots of people. We need dancing."
This was her first real party, after all. The first one her mother wasn't involved in, anyway...

"Hi, River!" she greeted the other girl as she approached, leaning over to give River a hug. "The robots did a great job, and look at you! I love the bathing suit!"
(Pucci was one of Weetzie's favorite designers. She thought his prints looked like the inner workings of nature.)
"I hope people show up, too. When I went to hang up posters, I told everyone I saw about the party so they should know it's going down tonight!"

"Thank you! I lucked out when I found this in the weird clothing store. The one where I got my butterfly costume. I think lots of people will come. There's always time for a party!"
She stands up again, reaching into the bowl for a lei of her own.

The two girls spent some time playing with Slink and admiring the decorations, and then Weetzie suggested that they get something to drink.
"Simon's coming, right?" she asked as she started towards the bar.

Party's a better option.
"Yo." He gives the girls a nod. The place sure as hell looks different, but like a walking talking iron filing standing right the hell next to a magnet, he's drawn to the food table where he picks up something that looks suspiciously like barf on a cracker.
If it's poisonous they wouldn't put it out to eat, right? He gives it an completely unconvinced sniff, then wonders if his sleight of hand is good enough to put it back without being noticed, and that goes to war right away with his always-hungry stomach.
Shit. A dilemma already.

She followed him to the food - she had been dying to try the nibbles, but didn't want to ruin the display before anyone else got there.
"I think that's pimento cheese on the cracker," she told Spike when he picked up one of the canapes. "It's not my favorite, but it's OK."

It doesn't sound poisonous, so... he eats it.
And waits a minute, but when it doesn't kill him, he shrugs and grins. "What the hell is pimento cheese? Doesn't look like anything I've ever eaten." Doesn't taste like it either, but like he's going to start picking nits on free food.
At least he didn't have to steal it, although he definitely would have used the old it was just sitting right out there defense.

"They don't eat it much anymore back in LA, but I think it was pretty big in the old days. It's in all of my mom's vintage cookbooks. That's why we're serving it now - this is a retro pool party, after all."
(Speaking of retro, Spike wasn't dressed to fit the theme of the party, but then the posters hadn't said anything about wearing retro clothes, so Weetzie guessed she could let it slide.)

He's found some floral board shorts and paired them with a short-sleeved button-down shirt. His hair's been allowed free rein, so it looks almost wind-tousled. Though that's its natural state, it fits the theme. He even managed to find a bracelet made of wooden beads carved with designs that look vaguely Polynesian. He'd fit in easily on the beaches of his teens, save only the thin chain around his neck that holds his dog-tags.
He looks around with a grin when he steps into the pool area. Yeah. This looks much more his style than last time. And the first order of business, he thinks, will be to find a drink.

"Hi, John!" she greeted him as she approached, Slink at her side. "Lookin' good! How's it going?"
Reply
"Good," he says, and claims himself a beer from the bar. "This all, uh, looks good. More my type of thing than the last one."
Hell, when he was a lot younger, he used to spend most of his spare time at the beach and tropical paradises have always been his favorite places to go on vacation. Tiki masks and paper flowers and other beach-related things are just right for party decorations as far as he's concerned.

"Well, I hope you have fun. Obviously, you've got the food and drinks right here, and the pool if you want to swim, and there'll be dancing later.
"Oh, and I almost forgot!" Grinning, Weetzie removed her lei and put it around his neck. "The perfect finishing touch!"

She's terribly excited. This is the first party she's ever planned that Mother didn't really plan first.
She grabbed a bright pink lei from the basket and put it around his neck. She was so glad they were having this party. It felt like being free, really free, for the first time in her life.

It always makes him smile to hear River at her most excited, talking so fast that she's almost difficult to understand. It doesn't happen often, and it's happened less often since she went to the Academy than it did before. She's had little to get excited about, and if there's one thing this place has been good for, it's been giving her the chance to do things she just can't do as a fugitive living on a smuggling ship. Throwing pool parties being one of them.
"It all looks great."
There's a touch of resigned ruefulness in his smile as she drapes a floral necklace -- bright pink? Really? -- around his neck. But then, he's always been willing to accept things from River that he wouldn't tolerate from others.
Giving him bright pink flowers being one of them.
"I hope it all goes well."

"This is going to be so much better than my coming-out party," she said, grinning.
She leaned her head on his shoulder. "Do you know how to limbo? I'm not sure how to do it either, but it's one of the things we're doing."

Seeing the leis, she doesn't doesn't hesitate and goes to put on one. A nice white one.
"Oh this is going to be so cool."

"I'm so glad you could make it! I love your hair!"

She gives Weetzie a great big hug in greeting then dips down to give Slink a nice, healthy pet. "And it's so good to see you both!"
