"That's my girl." Cain half whispered.

He wanted to climb onto the bed beside DG, to wrap his arms around her and assure them both that she was real and solid, as safe as she could be for now.

But he couldn't. Because when she finally woke up she could be traumatized by any kind of restraint, even an embrace. Feeling a body beside her could also trigger horrors.

He felt useless, helpless. Guilty. He hadn't prevented the whole incident. He hadn't gotten there fast enough. And once more, the people he loved suffered for it.

And where the hell were Lavender and Ahamo? They should have at least come by to see for themselves how DG was doing?

On the other hand... "How are Az and Duchess Keiren?"

He didn't want to leave DG for a moment. But he was going to have to check on Jeb, as well as the other women. But he wanted to get back here as quickly as possible.

Technically Marion had not returned to her duty as one of Princess Azkadellia's guards, under normal circumstances she would not have had her shift until afternon. Under the current circumstances...they had been given no specific orders, but the three main guards of the Princess had already come to a quick agreement to divide it back up between three eight hour shifts. With room to adapt depending on the needs of Azkadellia...Az ( ... )

Cain looked up at Marion. She was one of his best. It was why she held the post she did. The fact that she was beautiful helped all too well to disguise the fact that she could kill you with a stay from a corset, a properly applied blow to the upper ridge of a nose, or by snapping your neck ( ... )

At her superior officer's question, Marion was quick to shake her head. "No sir." Not that the guard knew of for sure, but she had strong beliefs that Azkadellia had not been touched in that manner. "I asked the Duchess after she mentioned that she had been held with the Princess for the first several hours of captivity. The two women had been informed that Azkadellia was to...have been given to the General's top lieutenants ( ... )

It was the coward's way out, Az knew it, but she just could not bring herself to do anything less than avoid everyone she could. Neither her mother nor father had come to see her, but she had expected that. They were not...close, after all. The only two conversations she had really had with her mother since the day she was possessed in Finaqua had either involved them arguing, or someone being attacked by a tiger. Not the most productive of talks between mother and daughter ( ... )

After a lengthy talk with Jeb, one that oddly enough, they should have had before the boy was shot and drugged, Cain went seeking Az ( ... )

The door opened, and Az froze, as much as she could anyway while still crying. Picking up her head, she reluctantly looked up to face the person who had entered, fear flickering when she saw who it was. She was not afraid of physical violence from him, not entirely, she had avoided him so that she would not have to hear blame coming from him. How many times had she been there when his life was wrecked, been on the other side of the steely hand of pain and destruction? Even as unwilling as she had been ( ... )

"I don't hate you because I've learned that once you were a terrified, but brave little girl who didn't stand a chance against a thousand annual old witch, but you tried. Azkadellia didn't do a thing wrong other than to somehow manage to survive fifteen years as a prisoner inside herself. The Witch was to blame ( ... )
