Finished The Museum of Desire - o dear, I do wish that once in a while, Dr Smug would not be dealing with a massively intricate, positively baroque case of weird serial killing? Or that the apparent rococco flourishes were, in fine Dame Agatha style, concealing some good old love/money/reputation problem plot.

Finished Shadows and Dreams. I am sure there is London-set occult-noir out there that I would not like, but so far, I'm not sure I've come across any. Have pre-ordered next in sequence.

What I read
Probably not in the best way - in snippets over zeveral days - Mighty Good Road, which I sfill do not consider one of Melissa Scott's best - somehow there is a thinness to the characters and their relationships which undercuts the narrative (one is consistently referred to as 'the little man'...)

Finished The Underwater Ballroom Society, which was, as is the wont of anthologies and collections, a bit of a mixed bag.

Finished The Killing in the Café.
Also This Young Monster, about which I was ambivalent. Very well-written, interesting stuff about the monstrous and freakish, but I just wasn't sure about the glamourisation of living fast, dying young, after doing loads of drugs, numerous doomed love affairs etc, because I suspect that this is another ( Read more... )
