Hey, hey. I'm Becky, an 18 year old Chemistry student and I moved into my halls of residence about 3 weeks ago. I've posted my room at home before but I haven't a clue how to find it again so...
When I was in college I checkerboarded my walls with black construction paper (not allowed anything permanent obviously). I was hardcore but I can't live with bare colorless walls, it depresses me. One summer semester I was lazy and just striped them, that didn't take much time at all.
It's great you have 2 windows, that makes the room bright and welcoming. However, it's a bit overwhelmingly orange, so I would suggest you buy some plants (if you're not good at keeping them alive, try fake ones :)) to create a colour contrast (green ones please, nothing with blossoms). Also get some bedsheets that either fit the green of the plants or don't contrast with the orange as much as your blue ones currently do (I'd suggest beige or white ones). There's also some blank space left on your walls, I guess it will fill with pictures and posters over time. Otherwise it's fine (big and bright, what more could one ask for??) :)
I hate orange so it's a bit annoying, I've always had a blue room and most of my actual stuff is blue. I have a feeling having white bed sheets is asking for trouble in terms of keeping them clean (I'm messy, sue me :P) so I'll have a look around I think. I need some new posters to put up, nearly all the ones I have at home are Doctor Who and I feel I've out grown having them plastered everywhere!
I second the idea of color coding your curtains with your bedding to make it flow a bit more... maybe look into getting some more storage boxes or a small shelf, because it looks like there's a lot of 'stuff' around that needs a home. Maybe a colourful rug on the floor as well? I also like the suggestion of some plants (real or fake) to bring a bit of life to it.
There have been some really nicely decorated dorms posted in the past, mayhaps take a browse through the tags to get some specific inspirations! this one for example while it's not a typical dorm room is really nicely colour coordinated and has lots of personal touches without being overbearing. Adding photos in frames and more personalized stuff might make it a bit more homely feeling as well. Good luck!
Oo I like the rug idea! THe stuff has a home really, I'd just come back from a weekend away and dumped stuff everywhere, I only really took the pictures to show a friend and wasn't that bothered about clearing up.
My parents are bringing some stuff tomorrow and I can drag them around looking for stuff!
Heh, I'm at Leeds, in possibly the worst accomodation.
I lucked out with the windows, only people who are at the end of the corridor in a block not attached to another one get 2... and it's also the biggest room in the flat.
Heh I was at Reading. I was in disabled access accomidation though, so I was hugely lucky to have a wetroom bathroom that was almost the size of my entire bedroom! I really miss that wetroom, it was amazing!
It was kind of odd though in my bedroom - Had the window on the back wall, but not one on the long wall, and I was the last room in the block, so it was an outside wall. It got horribly cold on that wall though, and it's the wall my bed was against.
