So I finally decided on a color for my walls (a nice tan/beige to offset the blue carpet and bedding) but my next problem lies in the filth in the carpet ( Read more... )

We have the same problem with our sofa and armchairs in the living room; they're a magnolia colour but after about three years they've somehow become all grotty. We use something called '1001 Troubleshooter'; basically you spray it onto any upholstery (carpets, sofas, etc), making sure the stain isn't too wet, wait a few minutes, massage the foam into the stain with a damp sponge, blot any excess liquid and leave it to dry. Once dried, you vacuum the treated area.

At first I was a bit skeptical about it, but the upholstery looked like it was brand new. Well, except for the few holes.

I hope this helped. If you can't get hold of 1001 troubleshooter, there should be something else that works just as good.

Maybe some Resolve? I've used it a couple times and it's worked pretty well. But I think it's only for new stains...but it might be worth picking up for stains in the future!

the problem with carpet shampoo is that it always leaves some residue behind on the carpet which actually attracts more dirt (soap cleans by binding to dirt and grease). in our first apartment, the carpet cleaners hired before we moved in left an insane amount of soap in the carpet. i was vacumming it up for the first two months we lived there ( ... )

I second the vinegar! I use it for so many things.

Also try a cleaner called Winning Colours. I got it at Home Depot in the paint section. It is skin and colour safe. I used it to get paint off of my jeans. You can pretty much use it for anything.

Eek, if your carpets are as bad as they sound, I would really just cave and hire some carpet cleaners. Make sure they know what they're doing and bonus points if they are eco-friendly. It will cost you more, but it will probably save you a huge headache.

Be sure to pre-treat the worse spots, let it sit for a bit, and then clean the carpets. You probably won't get it as clean as you'd like - I had light blue carpet in my room at my mom's house. The house had been a rental for years before we moved in, and the carpet was disgusting. The person used it as their "cat room". My aunt cleaned the carpet three times before we moved in, and it was still stained and gross.

I caved and ripped it out just before I moved to University in a vague attempt to get my mom to replace it. 5 years later, it's still the subflooring. LOL
