I definitely find community helps. Having a ready made audience for s little encouragement is great, but what's even better is the inspiration. Prompts and challenges really help me write more than I would.
I do think that solitary writing is better for thinking about what you want to improve at as a writer, and self-critique, for me personally, just since I enjoy the sharing aspect enough that it outweighs the more introspective aspects of writing at time, but I know some people agonize over the quality of their fic far more for fandom than if they were writing on their own, so it's clearly not universal.
That's a very good point you've made about writing solo; it likely is the best route to improving one's overall work/style. I'm feeling the need to do more of that the next few months; to focus more on thinking through a story, enjoying the process and not worrying about publishing/sharing it any too soon.
That said, I also really enjoy things like the 'word wars.' I think they're great when I'm stuck on something. So maybe it's about finding a balance.
