Joining in on some meta

1) The OTW is trying to get meta discussions going on their LJ and DW outlets every week. Their topic this week is about how community affects writing.

I was very interested in the link about whether community is, long-term, a good or a bad thing for writers. I can't say I have any personal insight given that I don't feel I do any communal writing. I also wonder how easily one can detach "community" from "social media distractions" in general.

But I wondered what others, who might relate to it better, think about it. Unfortunately no one has left a response there so far.

2) This seems like a pretty massive story about Windows 10 and its ability to police the content of your computer. I have about as much faith of it catching actual 'piracy' as of YouTube taking down only actual illegal content.

3) I have an unused Barnes and Noble gift card and decided to stop by the store recently to see what might be available. I'm not buying paper books and it's a bit too early for calendars, which we sometimes get from there.

I was looking at board games and was interested to note how fandom-oriented the stores have become. Not only are there tons of collectibles, but a lot of the displays are of fannishly popular things.

I certainly think it makes sense to cater to fans given that they're more likely to be into reading. But in general the stores seem to be gravitating to being a leisure time resource. Also obvious was a big display about crafting and hobbies.

4) In an, apparently, futile effort to control our lake's algae growth the management installed five underwater pumps to circulate water. While this has kept an area around the pumps clear, the green has spread back across the surface.

However, the ducks and geese apparently quite like their new jacuzzis.

5) This proposal for a music fan protest detailed some interesting facts about how everyone currently loses from the streaming profit sharing model.
