"Of course."

The answer was very automatic; Natalia had really only been spending the past two hours or so imagining all the things that she could talk to Ivan about, had he been here. Even Katya would be better right now than the person beside her. He was attractive, of course, but he wasn't brother.

At least, she pretended he was to keep up the ruse. "Are you?"

"Of course," he echoed. If he were being perfectly honest, the whole affair was more awkward than it was enjoyable, but he knew better than to tell that to a delicate young lady. He shifted his weight from foot to foot as he contemplated what to say next; most men would offer to buy her something, he supposed, but he didn't think that Rosemariné would appreciate footing the bill.

"Would you like to sit down for a bite to eat? One of my favourite cafés is just down the street," he said instead.

Delicate young lady, indeed. Natalia's mind was more focused on how she would find her brother tonight than what she was doing at the moment. He, certainly, would have provided a better date.

"That would be perfect." Natalia gestured that he should lead the way.

Jules did so, moving deftly to the road that lead to their destination. He stopped, though, when he realized that his strides were much longer than Natalia's, feeling horribly insensitive as he allowed her a moment to catch up. The worst she can do is leave me, he reminded himself; it sounded cruel, but the thought reassured him: it was unusual to be spending time with somebody that it wouldn't destroy his life to lose.

"You're fond of tea, I take it?" he asked as they walked, in the kindest tone he could manage.
