Discovered where the skittens are, in the nastiest corner of the garage, but I'm going to limit contact for Skit's sake. Just really, really glad to know that they're still there and all right.
The epic of Skittens has reminded me of, oh, 13 years ago when a fairly tame female cat (that we named Smokey) gave birth to kittens in our bushes. We felt bad about her being outside with kittens in the middle of a week of rain, so we moved her into a somewhat enclosed area in our basement... and about a week later the kittens disappeared. Cue frantic searching. Now, there's an awful lot of stuff in my parent's basement; boxes of old clothing, massive numbers of books, hundreds of file boxes full of decorations for different holidays. And there are a lot of places that Smokey could have hidden the kittens, or killed the kittens, or whatever, and we would have never been able to get to the part of the basement they were in, let alone find them.
Eventually, we discovered that she'd stuck them down inside a mostly-closed brown cardboard box full of clothing. But until then, it was terrifying.
