From the NY Times:
For nearly a week, Mr. Obama has struggled to distance himself from a series of controversial statements by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., who characterized the United States as fundamentally racist and the government as corrupt and murderous.

I'd heard about his grandmother being fearful in the street at black men passing by but I didn't hear about her making racists utternaces....how do you feel with your own flesh and blood says something, what to you think in your head...I'd love to know.

Do you just pass it off as the ramblings of old habit and age or what?

Well, that's my point. . . It is a complicated issue that cannot easily be extricated from the myriad relationships we have both on a personal level and in a broader social way.

I don't think it is a stretch to say that most (if not all) of us have family members, people who are close to us, who can be plotted along a wide contiunuum of racial attitudes - and it is not a matter of simply disowning them or discrediting them or simply ignoring them.

I have said it before and I will say it again, people in America don't really like to discuss race - In fact, mostly they refuse to except when extreme things happens that create a spectacle, while ignoring the day-to-day issues/relationships that have a lot to do with the pervasive attitudes that makes this a racist country.
