Christmas had been a mostly quiet affair. Harry's father was away on business so he had been spared having to take Mary Jane to a family dinner. New Year's Eve was not going to be as lucky. Stormin' Norman had made it very clear he expected his son and his daughter-in-law to show up to the New Year's Eve party that Norman was hosting.
His father rarely liked to host parties, and this one would be no different. He did it to appease the board members at OsCorp. He did it to keep his reputation as a member of New York society intact. He did it to control where his sons would be spending a holiday that was notorious with drinking and having a good time. Harry knew that his dad was still bitter over him eloping in Vegas. He had managed to mostly avoid him, but now he was going to have to face him with Mary Jane at his side.
If he thought he could get away with skipping it he would, but his dad had reminded him that Emily Osborn's holiday parties were always a favorite with her friends. He twisted the knife in the heart by reminding him that his mother would be the one hosting the party if she had not died so tragically due to the health issues she suffered after Harry was born. So that was that, Harry Osborn would close out the year at his father's holiday party with his wife at his side.
He prayed it wouldn't be as painful as he expected it to be, but he was pretty sure it was a prayer that wouldn't be answered.
