De hadn't noticed anyone approaching, too caught up in staring in the other direction and was startled to hear a voice, a smooth, calm, level...familiar voice directed at him.
De knew who it was before he had even turned around to look. Spock.
He wasn't able to stop his eyes widening, or his words freezing in his throat.
He nodded, in the absence of being able to do anything else.
This evening was turning out to be...odd. Just his voice, his intonations, it was pretty much exactly how Leonard had portrayed Spock. Somehow, De hadn't expected Spock to...be accurate. He wasn't really sure why. He hadn't expected any of them to really exist at all, so being surprised by elements of accuracy was nothing compared with the surprise of actual existence.
He nodded again.
He should probably say something.
"And you." A pause. "Nice to meet you. Umm. Please. Call me De."
My Leonard? De wasn't really sure if that meant what he thought it meant - Bill and Len hadn't said anything, as far as he could remember...and he wouldn't have thought, from his knowledge of Len's characterisation of Spock, at any rate, that Spock would have used the word 'my' unless...
De hoped his confusion, and yes, slight shock wasn't too obvious on his face.
"It's...well. It's. No. Not really." Honesty, wasn't it meant to be the best policy?
Spock shoots a look that is unmistakably fond (in an incredibly restrained Vulcan way) over at his Leonard.
"That is regrettable. If I can assist you, please, contact me so that I might do so."
Upon closer examination, the human does appear distressed. But also more and more like his own Leonard. It is remarkable and Spock would ask to touch his ears if they were alone.
My Leonard clearly did mean what De had thought it meant then. There was something...almost imperceptible visible in Spock's eyes, but there was something, some small change.
De was good at observing, even when he wasn't completely himself.
He nodded slightly. "Umm. Thank you. I guess. I wouldn't begin to know what you could help me with...but. Umm. Yes. Thank you."
Was Spock staring at his ears? De shifted, uncomfortably.
Spock makes a mental note to spend time exploring the contours of his own Leonard's ears. He takes a last look at this man's, this De's ears and then puts the thought away.
"it is often beneficial, particularly to humans, I have found, to spend time in the company of friends. Though we have only recently made each other's acquaintance, I would be gratified by the opportunity to become your friend."
De wasn't really sure what you said to Vulcans who were making you offers of friendship. He had always been under the impression that it wasn't really a Vulcan kind of thing to do. At least. Maybe it wasn't. If they'd been correct at all. Which De wasn't at all sure they had been. He was very confused.
"I'd like that. I think. Sorry. Everything's very, umm, confusing at the moment. I would though. You're right. It is easier with friends around. I guess...I guess I'm lucky Bill and Len are here."
"Friends...yes. They are important." De cast a glance over at Bill and Len, and smiled slightly. He wouldn't let his insecurities bother him here. This was not the time, nor the place, he told himself. Later.
There was a silence, and De began to feel a bit uncomfortable. He shifted on his chair a little, and just looked at Spock.
Spock could not resist the temptation.
"Am I correct in my hypothesis that you are the actor known as DeForest Kelley?"

Extraordinary how much this man looks like Spock's t'hy'la-Leonard.
"Fascinating."

Spock tested the syllable. These actors were shockingly informal but Spock found himself pleased by their presence.
"You resemble my Leonard.
One hopes your adjustment to this time and situation is proceeding adequately."

"It is reasonable to expect a great deal of confusion given your situation. It is, indeed, in the human way, fortunate to have friends."
Spock is almost glowy, as he thinks of his Jim and his Leonard and how good it is. And the other crewmembers, it is good to have them here as well.
