Birthdayness

"Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he could be the baddest motherfucker in the world. If I moved to a martial arts monastery in China and studied real hard for ten years. If my family was wiped out by Colombian drug dealers and I swore myself to revenge. If I got a fatal disease, had one ( Read more... )

25 is a good year, or at least was for me. My 25th birthday was kickass, and that whole year was fantastic. Hopefully it will be for you as well.

Regarding the Snow Crash quote, which I remember reflecting on it at the same time as you; I think that maybe you graduate from potential hero (Hiro?) to potential archon at this time. Perhaps it is just a semantic change though...

I hated to miss the party and whatnot, but interesting to note that you weren't at my 25th party either. Glad you like the gun. I didn't pick it out, organize the buying of it, or hand it to you, but I went to Ed's at time of purchase, looked it over, and said "appears to be a fine weapon," so I hope you agree.

I actually bought you a nice gift in Tokyo which, due to a mistake on my part, was unfortunately confiscated by Japanese security on my return flight.

Anyhow, happy belated birthday! I am as always proud to have you for my brother, and I hope that you have a sense for the strength of bond which I feel, but cannot often convey.

I don't think it's fair to count your badass chicken eggs before they hatch. Just because you've gotten older and hit a more milestone-y birthday doesn't mean that constant self improvement is an untainable goal. I'm not necessarily suggesting that you do this, but Clay didn't join the Marines until he was 27 and I'd reckon he's pretty badass now, much more so anyway than he was at 25. And maybe there are more important things at being badass at than being about to kick ass.

I'm that the birthday went over well, I'm sorry that I wasn't there for the surprise and all. I would have loved to seen your face. Or heard Kevin's speech. Or seen you get your gun. But I'm glad I could be there for it and for you. Happy Birthday!
