Jean ordered himself another scotch-whiskey and the barman hesitated, before making him his drink. It was his sixth one of the night and the barman suspected those were not the only drinks he had consumed that evening. He wasn’t wrong.
Jean watched the ice in his glass and wondered when it had all come to this. He knew he was prone to messing things up. He knew he could never hold on to anything good, but he never thought he would lose Oliver as well.
And yet he had.
He wasn’t surprised, really. He had the strangest of relationships with Oliver and he was used to their breakups and their getting back together. He expected the same thing to happen, this time around, though something felt different.
At first, he didn’t know what it was, but soon, instead of their usual song and dance, Oliver got closer to someone else. Instead of going back to him, Oliver found solace in someone else’s arms. He expected it to be a rebound, not to last, but the past few months proved that wasn’t the case.
For the first time, since he had known Oliver, he feared he had lost him for good and he wasn’t sure what to do anymore. Parts of him wanted to take Oliver, by the shoulders, shake him, and tell him to come back to him, that he was sorry, but he didn’t. He couldn’t.
Oliver looked happy and he wished he didn’t. It would make things easier. It would make wanting him back easier. But Oliver was happy and he wanted him to be happy. With him. Not with this other man.
He downed his drink and motioned for another one.
Oliver was gone and that was as much as he knew. He had lost him and he wasn’t sure how he felt about it, or where that left him.
For now, he would try to forget Oliver as well.
Another drink. Another drink, for Jean Tremblay, the greatest loser of them all. Another drink!
