Under Different Circumstances
Harem
“Tsé c’qui s’rait vraiment mon plus grand fantasme sexuel?”/ “You know what would be my greatest sexual fantasy?” Jean-Pierre asked his husband, one night. They had spent the day with Jean, Oliver and a few other special guests. By the time they returned home, the conversation turned to sexual fantasies and that was when Jean-Pierre committed his biggest mistake.
“Non, quoi?”/ “No, what?”
“Toi, Oliver, Vivianne, Olivia et moi.”/ “You, Oliver, Vivian, Olivia and me.” It was supposed to be light conversation. Instead, Jean-Pierre wasn’t sure he had ever seen Vincent so hurt and betrayed. He was so busy observing Vincent, he never saw the slap that came in his direction. However, he did hear it resonate in the room.
“Pardon?!”/ “Excuse me?!” Vincent yelled, at him.
“C’t’une fantaisie, chéri.”/ “It’s a fantasy, honey.”
“Don’t you chéri me, mister! I can’t believe you’ve just admitted to that!” Jean-Pierre was confused and wasn’t sure why Vincent was overreacting.
“Voyons donc, Vincent, calme-toi, là, pourquoi t’agis d’même?”/ “Calm down, Vincent, why are you acting this way?” Vincent got out of bed, eyes glimmering with tears.
“You tell me! All I know is that I’m not the one who just admitted to wanting to have a fucking orgy, for Christ’s sake! But you know what, thanks for letting me know I’m not good enough!” Vincent made to leave, but Jean-Pierre called him back.
“Crisse, c’pas comme si j’allais t’tromper, misère. C’t’encore avec toi, pis d’autres versions d’toi. C’comme si j’voulais baiser avec toutes les versions d’l’Ontario. Veux-tu ben m’dire c’qu’y’a d’mal dans ça?”/ “Christ, it’s not as if I was going to cheat on you. It’s still with you, and other versions of you. It’s like if I wanted to shag with all the versions of Ontario. What’s so wrong about that?” Vincent gave him the coldest of glares, as an answer, and then walked out of the room, leaving him quite puzzled.
Jean-Pierre decided to let him be, for now, since he knew it would be pointless to try to speak with his lover, when he was like this. On top of that, he still wasn’t sure what he had said that was so wrong. Vincent had asked him what his wildest sexual fantasy was and he had given him the answer. He failed to see where the problem was.
He figured he would clear everything up, with him, the following morning, but when he woke up, Vincent was nowhere to be found.
--
Vincent curled himself in his old comforter, in his old room, at his father’s place. He had made a beeline for Matthew’s house, the following morning, after a frightful night’s rest, in the guestroom. He would have left, after the conversation with Jean-Pierre, but he was too shocked and hurt to move.
He spent a good portion of the night weeping to himself and the moment he made it to his old bedroom, he started all over again. Matthew tried to ask him questions, but Vincent refused to answer and instead, locked himself up.
Many things bothered him about what Jean-Pierre had told him, the previous night. After having been in a relationship, where he found his partner having an orgy, the fact that Jean-Pierre’s sexual fantasy was to be with so many people unsettled him.
However, that wasn’t the worst.
He could have wrapped his head around that, given time, but the choice of people threw him off, and Jean-Pierre’s last comment even more.
Vincent didn’t just see it as Jean-Pierre wanting to be with the other Ontarios; he saw beyond that. He knew his husband got along with Oliver and that he found both Vivian and Olivia to be quite pretty. He had nothing against that. At least, not really.
The mere fact that Jean-Pierre wanted to have sex with the other Ontarios unsettled him. What if it meant that Jean-Pierre had settled for him? What if he had been Oliver, or Olivia, or Vivian? Would Jean-Pierre have married the other, instead of him? He firmly believed he and Jean-Pierre were meant to be together and that Jean-Pierre loved him, as much as he loved Jean-Pierre. However, now his partner had thrown him this curve ball and he wasn’t sure where he stood, in Jean-Pierre’s eyes, anymore.
--
When Jean-Pierre woke up and found the house empty, he already knew where Vincent was. He called up his father to make sure, and he was surprised when Matthew was so cold and distant towards him. He decided to solve this problem, after he walked Monsieur, and then drove down to Ottawa.
Jean-Pierre expected things to return to normal quickly, but when finally Matthew let him through and he found Vincent curled in on himself, he started thinking this was a pretty bigger issue than he thought it was.
This fact was confirmed, when Vincent threw every imaginable insult at him, when he admitted he still didn’t know why Vincent was acting this way. His husband told him not to bother visiting him, or talking to him, until he figured it out.
Jean-Pierre didn’t even bother trying to explain himself and left, feeling even more upset and frustrated, with the situation.
The first few days, Jean-Pierre didn’t think about his problem. He still didn’t see how what he had said could be bad and was convinced Vincent was overreacting, yet again. However, after half a week had gone by, he missed having Vincent around and he started thinking back to their conversation. He tried to see what it was that could have triggered this whole misunderstanding.
It took him a few more days, until it dawned on him. He was busy cleaning dishes, when it happened and he almost broke the salad bowl, when he dropped it in the sink. He immediately pulled on his shoes and jacket, before driving to his father’s place.
Matthew was not impressed it had taken his son that long to figure out what the problem was, but he was also relieved this would potentially be over, in a few hours. Jean-Pierre ran to Vincent’s basement bedroom and was glad his husband was there. He threw himself at him and held him tightly, in his arms. Vincent tried to push him away, without success.
“Oh mon Dieu, Vincent, chuis tellement désolé!”/ “Oh my God, Vincent, I’m so sorry!” Vincent simply looked at him coolly.
“You’re sorry for what?”
“Pour c’que j’ai dit. Chéri, chuis tellement désolé. J’me suis rappelé de c’que tu m’as dit, à propos d’un de tes ex… j’me sens comme le plus gros des trous d’cul…”/ “For what I said. Chéri, I’m so very sorry. I remembered what you told me, about one of your exes… I feel like the biggest of assholes…” He started. Vincent was surprised. Jean-Pierre had actually made the association.
“What else?”
“C’est pas vrai qu’tu m’combles plus. Tu me satisferas toujours, pis j’ai pas besoin des autres, pour être heureux, tu l’sais. Y faut pas qu’tu penses trop à c’que j’ai dit. C’pas vrai que j’veux t’remplacer. T’es la seule personne pour moi, Vincent.”/ “It’s not true that you don’t satisfy me anymore. You’ll always satisfy me, and I don’t need any of the others to be happy, you know it. Don’t think too much about what I said. It’s not true that I want to replace you. You’re the only person for me, Vincent.”
“Are you sure I’m the one for you? Are you sure you wouldn’t want to be married to Oliver, instead? Or to one of the girls?” Vincent wanted to believe him, but the words still haunted him.
“Non. T’es vraiment la seule personne, pour moi.”/ “No. You’re really the only person, for me.” Vincent looked up at him and Jean-Pierre could see the turmoil, in his lover’s eyes. On the one hand, Vincent wanted to blindly believe him, but on the other hand, part of him had been hurt and still needed time to heal.
“Prove it.” He murmured to him, before he hid his face in Jean-Pierre’s chest. The other man held him tightly and understood that this time, he had gone too far and that it would take more than a simple apology, for Vincent to heal.
--
It was a long healing process, but with every small thing Jean-Pierre did for Vincent, with every renewed effort he put in his relationship, with him, Vincent was convinced that Jean-Pierre really was genuine, when he told him he was the only one, for him.
The storm was over.
