Save your money. If and when you have the funds, you decide it still what you want to do, then do it. DO NOT NOT EVER SPEND MORE THAN YOU HAVE. Just my $.02.
Thank you hun :o) The class is only $250, and I could put 30-40 bucks a month on the CC once I put it on the card. I definitely wouldn't do anything else with the credit card either. Thanks for your input, I don't usually spend what I don't have but I was looking into this as more of an investment. We'll see. I'm sorta looking at a "no" though.
What's the interest rate on the card? If it's more than one digit, it's probably not worth it in the long run. If you can take out a real student loan, those are a good deal. And some schools may have financial aid.
You should talk to Harry's roommate about being a bartender. Like most service industry jobs, it all depends on where you work. You'd probably have to start out at a low paying job, and spend a year or so getting experience before you could get to where the good money is.
Don't do it. Bartender's schools won't get you hired as a bartender. Bar only hire bartenders with experience. Yes, it is a horrible catch-22, and I found out about it the hard way. You're better off buying a bartender's guide (the book) and lying about you bartending experience. You used to work in a hotel, tell 'em you tended bar there a bit. Trust me, bartending school is a waste of money, especailly when you know someone who has beeen to bartender's school and knows just about every drink known to man. Hope I helped.
Dude- there's always a catch 22 when you're trying to break into something, regardless of the industry or personal talent. I don't expect the school to get me hired, just trained, and most schools offer employment asistance - all I'd need would be the direction to go. I won't lie about experience. The plus side about going to an actual school as opposed to just reading about it is that I'd get actual practice and the feel of mixing drinks. Book smarts isn't the same as physical experience. Maybe a book would be a place to start for now, but if I were to decide to go for it, I'd really want serious training.
Employment assistance at most schools like that is a joke. Even if they say that X% of our people find work after here, that's not to say that they find work in that field.
If it only costs $250, how much can it really be worth?
Sorry to be all raining on your parade, but you did ask for opinions.
I agree with all of the above. School isn't the worst idea but don't put it on a card. It won't hurt to go to school and learn the trade. You do get a lot of valuable learning experiences from it. You learn mixology, flare, lingo, where to look and what to look for and other things. No the schooling will not automatically get you a job. Be prepared to start out in a low end place because experience is key. So if you decide to do it and really stick to it then it will pay off in the long run. Once you get through school, pay your dues in a shit bar and possibly a few more that aren't too much better you should get to a stable point with it. The bar tenders I know have gone through a lot of shit to get where they are but they love their job plus they have a lot of fun and make very good money. Make no mistake it is an investment and it’s not an easy field to get into but it can pay off rather well if you work at it.
Yeah. The class is only $250, and I definitely don't have that all at onec a avialbe right now. I would look forward to all of what I'd learn, regardless of how successful it would be. And I know it would start out slowly, but eventually pick up. It's just something I'm sort of playing with right now. Thank you :o)
I have one word for you. Wrists. You're wrists all ready bother you with the typing you do. How much more are they going to bother you if you continue to type and then go sling bottles for a few hours afterwards.
That being said, I think going to school for a trade is a good idea. And if you think that your body an take it, go to bartending school. But do NOT put it on a credit card to go. Speaking from experience...it isnt worth it.
I know it would be hard on my wrists, but I have made peace with the fact that they will bother me regardless of what I do with them. The class would only cost me $250, and the school I'm looking at is very close to RE, so I wouldn't be going too much further with gas. I know it would be fun, I'm just trying to see how worth it in the long run it'll be. Thank you :o)
Well, I say go for it then. But maybe wait until after the first of the year. Save a little money. Plus, if Pixie gets hired at RE, then you can put your "finder's fee" towards it.
