It's quiet in the office so I'm taking the opportunity to post. As ever, life is relatively uneventful. I went for dinner with a friend from the Irish College in Paris last night. We went to Tante Zoë for the early bird menu. It was quite good. I had ( Read more... )

I thought that the storyline of Vito's homosexuality was quite weak. Twittering around in the meadows with his hunk o' man was one of the most risible scenes ever to grace the Sopranos. Also, I thought that a mobster's inability to come to terms with a mundane life was much better expressed at the end of Season Five when Chris almost went over to the Feds with Adriana, but changed his mind when he saw a white trash father struggling with his rugrats in a station wagon. However, when it comes to operatic violence the Sopranos never fails to deliver, and I couldn't take my wide eyes off Phil Leotardo sodomising Vito with a pool cue!

Did they actually show it in graphic detail? I thought the fact that Phil came out of the closet before administering Vito's fate was particularly inspired.

As for Vito and his fireman, I think that they captured the closeted gay thing fairly well. I mean, it doesn't exactly make for comfortable viewing watching ten-ton Vito in bed, snogging his man, but there are plenty of fearful middle-aged gays out there indulging in sweaty extra-marital liasions. I think they could scarcely have portrayed it better.

One could say that it's a sign of the Sopranos going soft, but really, some of the best bits are the most poignant - e.g. the Christmas episode where they're all crowded into the sitting room, and the camera pans away slowly before the credits roll.

So sad that we communicate mostly through the medium of Livejournal these days.

It wasn't about "comfortable viewing", I just thought that the writers were too concerned with portraying a tender gay romance to include the grit and imperfection that made relationships like Chris/Adriana and Tony/Carmela so believable. The gay firefighter was just a big bundle of affection, hardly human enough to fall in love with.

Thanks for the bold writing, by the way, I might have missed your point otherwise...

Well he did kick the shite out of Vito outside the bar one night, and they nearly got into fisticuffs on a separate occasion.

No problem on the bold font.

He kicked the shit out of him because low-down, dirty Vito tried to pick up an iron bar. The noble firefighter wouldn't stoop to the man's level. Even still, a firefighter! They might as well have picked one of the Village People!

Nothing wrong with a bit of camp. Anyway, we know from an earlier episode that Vito is into kinky uniforms.

Did you park your Scotland trip plans, by the way?

The Scottish adventure is on hold, but watch this space. Can you use MSN Messenger locked away in the bowels of Enterprise Ireland?
