February in Santa Barbara is a tableau of palm trees against purple mountains, four turkey vultures circling against the veil of white cloud that hides the distant peaks and separates their slopes from the blue sky above. On Friday the 13th, at about 10:50 am. My fellow TAs and I were walking to Campbell in the rain, which was intense. My officemate, who is a Texan and the resident expert on weird weather, said, "It's hailing!" I was just starting to deny it when I held out my hand from the umbrella . . . and small pieces of ice fell into my palm.

While it was hailing down here, there was a snowfall on top of the mountains, but it was gone within two hours and I didn't get a picture.
