Maurice

I have now seen an eviscerated version of Maurice (1987), that is the beginning up to early stages of Maurice's (James Whilby) relationship with Clive (Hugh Grant), then skipping to the fun bits where Alec Scudder (Rupert Graves) shows up. Hugh Grant is prettier young, but the other two have improved with age, I find.

I am watching A Room with a View now and I find Graves to feel younger in that one, more nervous and uncontrolled, whereas I find the Scudder portrayal to be much more deliberately crafted.

What did you think of the love scenes???

James Wilby didn't make much of an impression on me when I saw the film 1987 and the couple of times thereafter; it was all Graves for me then. Now, it's hard to tell, since I'm watching it on purpose for Graves, but I do think it could have been the same movie with a different actor playing Maurice. Not the same movie if someone else (who can't have been as good, I think -- really, who could have?) had played Scudder.

The love scenes were much shorter than I had expected! I liked the semi-awkward realism of them, and the casual way Scudder walks around the hotel room, getting dressed.

Alas, yes, too short. Could have gone on for another half hour as far as I was concerned. I was grateful for the deleted extra scene. James Ivory said he was sorry they'd deleted it and it made me want to kick him. Put it back, then!!!
