Maurice
I have now seen an eviscerated version of Maurice (1987), that is the beginning up to early stages of Maurice's (James Whilby) relationship with Clive (Hugh Grant), then skipping to the fun bits where Alec Scudder (Rupert Graves) shows up. I also watched a few deleted scenes and interviews with the actors and screenwriter, which took me past bedtime.
They are all very pretty. But I think I liked better looking at the actors as they were in the interviews, which were from 2004 or so.
I think this will reward further watching! This was Graves' second film, and he seems really, really young in it. Weirdly, he seems younger to me than in the bits of A Room With a View that I've seen (I never saw it all the way through, either). Maybe because in the one, he's clearly a boy, but in the other, he's a young man, not entirely formed yet. I especially loved his body language - I almost didn't need to hear his words, or at least most of them. Best scene: Alec and Maurice under an umbrella.
Hugh Grant played...it felt like the same character he always plays, except not straight. It was right for the movie, though.
I was impressed with James Whilby, particularly towards the end; you could see his character developing a spine as he accepted himself. Something in the muscles of the face? His posture? I never saw "Foyle's War" but am now a tad curious.
Ben Kingsley must never try to do an American accent like that again. Please. Don't make him. *whimper* I might have had nightmares.
ETA: Forgot to mention, bonus use of Allegri's "Miserere." Which totally threw me out of the story because I've performed it, but that's not the movie's fault.
