separate beds

It broke my heart to do it, but for the last few Cobie and Kelly have been in a power struggle over the dog bed. Well, mostly Cobie, who refuses to go to bed if Kelly's in it. He paces and paces, his tags jingling and jingling, around the bed. Upon giving up pacing, he'd woof at her head a couple of times, which she ignored. Then he'd go lie ( Read more... )

Sookie, too, loves sleeping warm. She's like a cat: as soon as the spring sun starts coming in through the windows she moves with the sun patches. When allowed in bed with us, she curls up under the covers next to my butt. When we make a fire in the fire place she wants to come up in my lap. I sit with my feet propped up towards the fire, and she crawls out on my legs and sleeps somewhere on my knees, in order to get as close to the fire as possible...

Maybe it's a JRT thing? Kelly follows the sun, too. I used to call Cobie the Sun Dog when he was being bad, after a devil dog in a story, but I call Kelly the same thing for this entire other reason, lol. I have a series of pictures of Kelly sun-dogging it, and lately Cobie's even been joining her on occasion. (My shins are covered in bruises at all times where Kelly uses them as the highway from the sofa to the coffee table.)

I think it might be a JRT thing. They're fox dogs after all, bred to go after the fox into tiny little holes. That's my theory as to why Sookie likes being under our covers, anyway. When she was a puppy she loved sleeping inside our sweaters... There are still times when she paws at our clothes, wanting us to lift a corner of a sweater so she can crawl in! She just doesn't get that she doesn't fit anymore...
When I have slept in a sleeping bad, she has crawled all the way to the foot of the bag and happily slept there. I don't know how she breathes!

We got a puppy yesterday and her own bed right away... but she loves Hunter's bed already. He has never put up a fight over his bed, because Joe claimed it when Hunter arrived in October 06, but this time HE's the Alpha and this is a newcomer to HIS territory. But he's been okay. The ONLY time he's growled or snapped at her was when I was lying on the couch (which is HIS time, because he lies on the floor beside the couch so I can reach off and pet him) and she hopped up against the couch in HIS spot. He gets very jealous, but he's okay with kids... I guess the same might go for puppies. hehe
